Which keys are suitable for copying?
Not all keys are the same. Front door keys, apartment keys, car keys — most types can be copied, but there are exceptions.
Some keys need authorization before they can be copied — high-security keys, safe keys, master keys and keys belonging to a master key system. For those you'll need the security card. Ordinary keys for apartment, house or side entrance doors can usually be copied straight away.

When it comes to key duplication, many people think of front door and apartment keys, as these are types of keys for which a copy of the original key is frequently needed.
How much does it cost to copy a key?
Copying a key costs money, but not much: a simple apartment key lands somewhere between a few euros and the low twenties. Tell us which key you need and we'll quote you a fixed price.

Copying a key takes three things: a blank, a cutting machine and someone who knows how to use it. The price covers the blank, the time it takes, and a small share of the equipment and shop costs.

What is the process if I want to have a key copied?
When you have a key duplicated, you will find that it is a simple process. Here is what the procedure looks like:
- Call us and schedule an appointment
- Come visit us at our store and bring the original key. For security keys, we need the security card.
- We then cut the copy from a blank using specialist tools.
- Usually, such a copying process takes only a few minutes, so you can wait in the store. Alternatively, you can pick up the finished key at a later time.

May I, as a tenant, make a copy of my apartment key?
Under German tenancy law, tenants are allowed to have keys copied. Depending on your lease, you don't need the landlord's permission, though it's good practice to tell them another key exists. When you move out, hand the copies back along with the originals.
How many keys are lost?
A common reason to duplicate a key is that another one is lost. It is estimated that this happens 800,000 times a year in Germany.
What is a security card?
Some apartments are equipped with patented locking systems. The corresponding keys or cylinders are listed on a security card, which serves as proof of authorization and protects against unauthorized key duplication. Keys can only be copied with the security card.
If you lose a key and someone hands it back, the security card is your assurance that the finder didn't have a copy cut. That makes your home a good deal safer than it would otherwise be.
If you rent property out, the security card tells you no extra keys were cut. When a new tenant moves in, you know for certain the previous one can't get back inside.
It is important to keep the security card in a safe place so that keys cannot be copied illegally. If the card is lost, you can apply for a replacement card. To ensure a high level of security in this case as well, documents such as an affidavit are required.
