Door opening in Berlin: How long does that really take?

August 13, 2026 | Locksmith Berlin, Emergency Locksmith

You are standing in front of your apartment door, the key is inside, and the first question is almost always the same: How long is this going to take now? When opening a door in Berlin, the duration consists of two parts: the travel time and the actual opening. The travel time is often the longer part. The opening itself is in most cases surprisingly fast.

We work from Reinickendorf and drive across half the city every day. That is why we are giving you concrete figures instead of vague promises.

In August, a Berlin special feature is added: holiday and vacation time. The neighbor with the spare key is at the Baltic Sea, the colleague who usually helps out is off. If you lock yourself out now, you usually no longer have the short route. Then what counts is how fast someone is actually standing in front of your door.

The short answer

In Berlin, expect 30 to 40 minutes before the technician is at your door. Opening a jammed door usually takes only a few minutes. If the door is locked, it takes a bit longer, typically 5 to 15 minutes. After an hour at the latest, you will normally be back inside your apartment.

Directions: What is realistic in Berlin

The travel time depends on two things, distance and traffic. From our location in Reinickendorf, it looks like this:

  • Reinickendorf and Tegel: usually within 20 minutes
  • Wedding, Pankow, Spandau: about 30 minutes
  • Remaining Berlin districts: typically 30-40 minutes

And the honest caveat: rush hour, construction sites on the urban highway, or a protest in Mitte will disrupt any schedule. If we say 25 minutes on the phone and it turns out to be 35, we will tell you. Anyone who flat-out promises you 15 minutes for the whole of Berlin either gets lucky or is playing fast and loose with the truth.

The opening itself: usually a matter of minutes

Door just pulled shut

The most common scenario in Berlin. You just wanted to take the trash down for a moment, the door slams shut, and the keys are on the hallway dresser. Exactly this happened during one of our call-outs in Wittenau: a 10-minute drive, and then the door was open in no time, without any damage to the lock.

A door that has fallen shut is only pulled into the latch, not locked. An experienced technician can open it in a few minutes. The cylinder remains intact, and you do not need a new key.

Door locked

Turned once or twice, the bolts are in the frame. This takes longer, usually 10 to 20 minutes, and requires replacing the cylinder. Depending on its size, the new cylinder costs 40 to 60 euros and can be installed in a few minutes.

What can prolong the duration

Sometimes there is more behind the door than expected. A customer had the problem that their key no longer worked. We were there within 20 minutes, and when removing the cylinder, a broken bolt became apparent. The bolt had to be retracted manually, which made it necessary to slightly cut open the door and lock. In the end, there was a new lock, a new cylinder, and new door hardware. Today, nothing of the repair can be seen anymore.

Such operations take one to two hours. They are the exception, but they do happen. Typical delays are a broken key in the cylinder, a defective lock, a security door with multiple locking points, and previous attempts to open it yourself using a card, wire, or drill.

What you can do to make it go faster

A few things really help:

  1. Ask on the phone whether it has been completed. That determines what material we take with us.
  2. State the floor and what happened.
  3. Wait at the front door or send someone down. A closed house entrance regularly takes a few extra minutes.
  4. Do not experiment on your own. Any attempt of your own with wire or a card can damage the lock so badly that a five-minute opening turns into a cylinder or lock replacement.
