Imagine this: It is shortly after 7 p.m., you are standing outside your apartment door in Berlin-Reinickendorf, and your key is inside. You quickly search for a locksmith service, click on the first hit that promises „starting at €29," and an hour later the technician presents you with an invoice for €380. This scenario is not an isolated incident. In Berlin, dishonest locksmith services are among the most frequently reported complaints to consumer protection agencies. Anyone who knows what to look out for in an emergency saves themselves a lot of trouble—and money. A locksmith service with a fixed price in Berlin is the most important criterion of all.

The scam: How rip-off locksmith services operate in Berlin

The pattern is always similar: online advertising uses an extremely low entry price — „Door opening from €19" or „Locksmith from €29." What the provider then charges on-site has nothing to do with this price anymore. Suddenly, travel costs are added, special surcharges for nights or weekends, costs for supposedly necessary materials — and before you know it, you're at several hundred euros.

Especially brazen: Many of these providers do not have a real Berlin address or a fixed registered office, and their company names are stuffed with keywords like „Schlüsseldienst Berlin 24h Notfall Günstig GmbH". Google is now actively taking action against these profiles and suspending them—but until that happens, consumers may have already suffered damage.

How to recognize a reputable locksmith

A reliable locksmith service can be identified by a few clear characteristics:

Fixed price is given over the phone. Reputable providers give you a concrete price before driving out — not a huge range of 30 to 300 €, but a clear figure. And that price then applies. Period.

No bait-and-switch pricing on the website. If a website advertises „starting at €19" but does not explain specific scenarios and prices, that is a red flag. True transparency looks different: daytime or night, door locked or just pulled shut—that makes a difference, and that difference should be communicated openly.

Comprehensible reviews. Many genuine customer reviews over a longer period are a good sign. Hundreds of reviews in the same week are a bad one.

Fixed Berlin address and phone number. Anyone who does not have a real office is difficult to reach if problems arise.

What a door opening in Berlin really costs

Fair prices depend on two factors: the time of day (day or night) and the state of the door (just pulled shut or locked).
